Rembrand has a beautiful sketch/etch of a man digging deep into his pants to reach for his coins. He is standing, in a rather contorted manner, before the sitting tax-collector.
Here in Spain I have seen quite a lot of times, in any case much more than in Holland, people counting, always in a stooped kind of way, the coins in their hands. Do I have enough to buy the pen-ultimate (in Spain they never say -last- , because you’d be in your grave after that) ‘copa’ , drink ?
I also saw this motion a lot in India.
PS Couldn’t google it but here’s a Rembrand image:
Anyone out there found it ?
